Our Name

Why Saint Sebastian?

Saint Sebastian is the Patron Saint of Athletes because of his physical endurance and his energetic way of spreading and defending the faith. Sebastian is also patron to all soldiers. He entered the Roman army under Emperor Carinus in 283 in order to defend the confessors and martyrs of his day without drawing attention to himself. St. Sebastian was young and strong, physically surviving multiple arrow wounds. Today this strength translates to the perseverance we see in many of the children attending the schools that we support. They may not have the
“ material things” but they do have “heart” and “desire”.

Within our catholic faith, Patron Saints are those that we turn to in times of need. Our prayers to the saints often provide encouragement and support in our lives. Our hope is that the children we touch through the Saint Sebastian Project and those who join us to help the children in these needy schools, will look to Saint Sebastian in hopes of attaining strength and endurance.

One prayer to Saint Sebastian asks that athletes be as strong in their faith as he was. St. Sebastian's appeal is universal. In a world that often overwhelms us, we look to him in hopes of sharing in the vitality that made him steadfast in life and faith.

Prayer to St. Sebastian (Patron of Athletes)

Dear Commander at the Roman Emperor’s court, you chose to be also a soldier of Christ and dared to spread faith in the King of Kings, for which you were condemned to die. Your body, however, proved athletically strong and the executing arrows extremely weak. So another means to kill you was chosen and you gave your life to the Lord. May athletes be always as strong in their faith as their Patron Saint so clearly has been. Amen
